To be honest, it may not actually be my first poem, certainly not my first attempt at poetry, but it is the first (possibly the only) poem I have written that anyone has ever remembered. Written in Grade 2 at Warrawee Primary School, this poem earned me a green cardboard medal to hang around my neck on a piece of wool. I think it is a powerful expression of my lifelong concerns for correct grammar and biological accuracy.
Birdies, Birdies
Birdies, birdies
Don't come in herdies.
If they would, I wouldn't think they should.
Birds, birds
Don't come in herds.
